DTE Energy is a Michigan-based regulated utility holding company. Its two core subsidiaries are DTE Electric, which generates and distributes electricity to roughly 2.3 million customers in southeastern Michigan, and DTE Gas, which distributes natural gas to roughly 1.4 million customers across Michigan. Both utilities operate as geographic monopolies regulated by the Michigan Public Service Commission, which sets rates designed to allow cost recovery plus an authorized return on invested capital. The more capital DTE invests in its grid, generation, and pipelines, the larger its rate base, and the more earnings the utilities can generate. DTE Electric's generation mix includes coal, natural gas, nuclear, and a growing renewables portfolio. DTE Gas owns underground storage fields with roughly 139 Bcf of working capacity. DTE also operates two smaller non-utility businesses: DTE Vantage, which runs renewable natural gas recovery projects, on-site industrial energy solutions, and a metallurgical coke business; and an Energy Trading segment that trades physical power and gas. DTE's primary growth driver is large-scale data center load growth in southeastern Michigan — DTE has signed agreements with Oracle for 1.4 GW of new load and is in advanced negotiations for an additional 3 GW. Beyond data centers, DTE is investing heavily in grid modernization and clean energy, supported by Michigan legislation requiring 100% clean energy by 2040 and 50% renewables by 2030.
