DESCRIPTION

A. O. Smith manufactures and sells water heaters, boilers, and water treatment products for residential and commercial applications, including homes, apartments, hotels, hospitals, and office buildings. Water heaters are the dominant product, spanning electric, gas, tankless, heat pump, and solar configurations across a wide range of sizes. A key characteristic of the business is that roughly 80-85% of water heater demand is replacement-driven — units fail and must be replaced quickly — making revenue highly recurring and relatively insulated from economic cycles. Boilers, sold under the Lochinvar brand, are used primarily for space heating in commercial buildings and benefit from a secular shift toward high-efficiency condensing products. Water treatment, a newer and smaller platform built largely through acquisitions, includes whole-home filtration, softeners, and reverse osmosis systems. In North America, A. O. Smith sells through wholesale plumbing distributors, retail (including an exclusive relationship with Lowe's), and MRO channels. The company operates two segments: North America (~78% of revenue), which generates strong margins driven by the company's leading market position, and Rest of World (~22%), primarily China, where the business has been declining due to a weak property market and local competition, and is under strategic review. India is a growing market, bolstered by the 2024 acquisition of Pureit. Steel is the primary input cost, and A. O. Smith manages price-cost dynamics through periodic price increases. The company generates strong free cash flow and has returned substantial capital to shareholders through dividends and buybacks while maintaining capacity for M&A.
