DESCRIPTION

LightPath Technologies makes optical components, assemblies, and infrared imaging systems used in defense, industrial, and commercial applications. The company is in the middle of a deliberate transition — from a pure optical component manufacturer to a supplier of complete infrared camera systems. LightPath sells infrared components (lenses and optical elements made from infrared materials), precision molded glass aspheric lenses for telecom, medical, and industrial equipment (its legacy visible components business, now in gradual decline), and a growing portfolio of assemblies and complete infrared cameras. Cameras range from uncooled units at $10,000–$30,000 to cooled long-range systems at $50,000–$500,000 per unit. LightPath sells directly to defense prime contractors including Lockheed Martin, L3 Harris, and Elbit Systems of America, as well as OEMs and government agencies. A key competitive asset is LightPath's proprietary BlackDiamond chalcogenide glass, manufactured in-house in Orlando under an exclusive license from the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory. As China — which controls over 90% of global germanium supply — has tightened export restrictions on the dominant traditional infrared lens material, BlackDiamond has emerged as a supply-chain-resilient substitute, enabling LightPath to win sole-source positions on defense programs. LightPath operates manufacturing in Orlando, Zhenjiang China, Riga Latvia, Hudson New Hampshire, and Plano Texas. Management targets ~40% gross margins as cameras become a larger share of revenue, versus the low-to-mid 20s currently, with a long-term target of 15% adjusted EBITDA margins.
