Atlantic Union Bankshares is the holding company for Atlantic Union Bank, a full-service commercial and retail bank and the largest regional bank headquartered in Virginia, with operations across Virginia, Maryland, Washington D.C., and North Carolina. Atlantic Union's core business is traditional banking: taking in deposits and making loans. Its loan portfolio is split across commercial real estate, commercial and industrial lending, and residential mortgage and consumer loans. Atlantic Union operates two segments: Wholesale Banking, which serves commercial and institutional clients with CRE and C&I lending, treasury management, capital markets, wealth management, and equipment finance; and Consumer Banking, which serves retail customers and small businesses with home loans, deposit accounts, and retail investment services. Beyond core lending, Atlantic Union runs several fee-generating businesses including equipment finance, wealth management and trust, capital markets, and a specialty government contractor finance unit focused on national security and defense contractors. Atlantic Union earns a net interest margin on the spread between loan and investment yields and deposit costs. The company has grown primarily through M&A, most recently acquiring Sandy Spring in April 2025, making Atlantic Union the leading regional bank by deposit market share in both Virginia and Maryland. Management's current strategy focuses on organic expansion into North Carolina, with plans to open branches in the Research Triangle and Wilmington, while explicitly pausing further acquisitions to demonstrate the earnings power of the existing franchise.
