DESCRIPTION

Virtus Investment Partners is a multi-manager asset management firm that manages approximately $159.5B in AUM. Rather than managing money through a single team, Virtus operates through a collection of independent investment managers, each with its own style, process, and brand. The largest of these is Kayne Anderson Rudnick, a quality-focused equity manager with roughly $57.9B in AUM. Other significant managers include Sustainable Growth Advisers, Newfleet Asset Management, Duff & Phelps Investment Management, and Seix Investment Advisors. Virtus serves both retail and institutional clients: retail investors access strategies through mutual funds, ETFs, and SMAs distributed via financial intermediaries, while institutional clients are served through separate accounts, commingled accounts, subadvisory mandates, and CLOs. AUM breaks down roughly into institutional accounts (33%), retail separate accounts (27%), open-end funds (33%), and closed-end funds (7%). Revenue is almost entirely asset-based fees, with a blended average fee rate of roughly 41 bps. The business has meaningful operating leverage, as the largest cost items are employment expenses and a relatively fixed operating expense base. Virtus is expanding its active ETF platform, which reached $5.2B in AUM and grew 72% year-over-year, and is pushing into private credit through two recent acquisitions: a pending majority stake in Keystone National Group, an asset-based lending manager, and a 35% stake in Crescent Cove Advisors, a private credit firm focused on high-growth middle market technology companies.
