Northern Technologies International (NTIC) is a specialty chemicals company with two core businesses: ZERUST corrosion prevention products and Natur-Tec compostable plastics. ZERUST, the older and larger business, uses volatile corrosion inhibitors (VCIs) — proprietary chemicals that release a vapor to coat and protect metal surfaces from rust. ZERUST products include VCI-infused packaging, liquid coatings, vapor diffusers, and engineered solutions for oil and gas infrastructure such as storage tank bottoms, pipeline casings, and offshore floating platforms. ZERUST serves customers across automotive, industrial, mining, agriculture, and oil and gas end markets. NTIC sells ZERUST directly in North America, China, India, Brazil, and Southeast Asia, and also earns service fees and equity income through a network of 15 joint ventures that sell ZERUST across Europe and Asia. Natur-Tec sells bio-based, certified compostable resins and finished products — bags, cutlery, food packaging, and gloves — to converters, distributors, and retailers, with demand driven by corporate sustainability goals and government bans on single-use plastics. NTIC's primary growth focus is ZERUST oil and gas, where VCI-based solutions are positioned as cheaper and easier to deploy than traditional cathodic protection systems; NTIC recently secured a multi-year offshore contract in Brazil to protect floating production storage and offloading units. Natur-Tec growth is driven by expanded distribution and development of compostable food packaging enabled by improved barrier properties in compostable films.
