DESCRIPTION

Helix Energy Solutions provides specialty services to the offshore energy industry, operating through three core businesses: well intervention, robotics, and shallow water abandonment. Well intervention is Helix's largest and most differentiated segment — Helix operates purpose-built vessels that connect to subsea wellheads to perform production enhancement and plug-and-abandonment work at lower cost than traditional offshore drilling rigs. This cost advantage is Helix's core commercial proposition, and demand for its vessels increases when drilling rig utilization is high and operators seek lower-cost alternatives. Helix operates seven well intervention vessels globally, including deepwater-capable semi-submersibles, serving major and independent oil and gas companies across the Gulf of America, Brazil, the North Sea, West Africa, and Asia Pacific. The Robotics segment provides subsea inspection, repair, and maintenance services to oil and gas customers, and cable burial and site clearance services to offshore wind farms — now roughly half of Robotics revenue. Helix operates 39 ROVs, six trenchers, and related equipment on chartered vessels. The Shallow Water Abandonment segment serves Gulf of America shelf decommissioning using liftboats, dive support vessels, and related equipment. Helix earns revenue primarily through day-rate and lump-sum contracts, with profitability driven by vessel utilization and achieved day rates. Helix holds a net cash position and is allocating capital toward share repurchases, potential M&A in offshore wind and adjacent markets, and expanding its trenching fleet to capture growing offshore wind cable burial demand.
