DESCRIPTION

Quest Patent Research is a patent monetization company — commonly known as a "patent troll" — that acquires patent portfolios and generates revenue almost exclusively through patent infringement litigation and the settlements that result from it. The company does not develop technology and has no R&D expense; its entire business model is identifying undermonetized patents, acquiring them, and using litigation to extract licensing fees. Quest Patent Research acquires patents from inventors, corporations, and other patent owners using third-party financing rather than its own cash. Because the financing partner is repaid first out of any settlement proceeds, followed by contingency law firms and any seller earn-outs, Quest Patent Research's actual economic interest in a recovery is whatever remains after satisfying those prior claims. Virtually all revenue comes from settling lawsuits, typically filed in the Eastern District of Texas, which can take years to resolve, making revenue timing highly unpredictable. The company is extremely small, with only two employees, and its CEO is solely responsible for acquisitions. Quest Patent Research manages 24 patent portfolios but is actively monetizing only seven, spanning data storage security, semiconductor fabrication, network security, mobile communications, vehicle control systems, and touchscreen interfaces. The largest active portfolio, acquired in April 2025, consists of over 2,500 patents related to data storage and semiconductor circuitry, with lawsuits already filed against several major semiconductor companies.
