DESCRIPTION

AstroNova designs and manufactures specialty printing systems and aerospace electronics across two segments. In Product ID, AstroNova sells digital color label printers, direct-to-package printers, and industrial print presses under the QuickLabel, TrojanLabel, AstroJet, and GetLabels brands, targeting customers in food and beverage, chemical, apparel, and other industries who print labels and packaging on-demand at their own facilities. AstroNova also sells the ink, labels, and other consumables that run through these printers, generating recurring revenue. In Aerospace, AstroNova sells flight deck printers under its ToughWriter brand to commercial airlines, business aviation operators, and military customers, along with ToughSwitch Ethernet networking hardware for military aircraft and data acquisition systems for rocket, missile, and flight testing applications. AstroNova claims market leadership in flight deck printers, with its installed base across more than 30,000 aircraft. The business runs on a razor-and-blade model: AstroNova sells hardware and then earns recurring revenue from consumables and services, which management says represented roughly 71% of FY25 sales. Two key near-term drivers are the ongoing transition from legacy licensed printer platforms to AstroNova's own ToughWriter product family — which carries no royalty burden and higher margins — and the rollout of a next-generation print engine in Product ID that can use a broader range of inks sourced from multiple suppliers.
