DESCRIPTION

Lifeway Foods makes and sells kefir, a cultured dairy drink high in protein, calcium, vitamin D, and probiotic cultures, consumed primarily for gut health benefits. Lifeway was the first company to commercialize kefir at scale in the U.S. and remains the dominant player in the category. Drinkable kefir accounts for roughly 85% of net sales, sold in a wide variety of flavors, sizes, and milk types — including organic — under the Lifeway brand and private label. Lifeway's secondary product is Lifeway Farmers' Cheese, a soft, probiotic-rich cheese positioned as a healthy alternative to cottage cheese, with distribution expanding rapidly. Lifeway sells through grocery chains, club stores, drug stores, and mass merchandisers — including Walmart, Target, Costco, and CVS — with about 51% of sales through direct retail and 47% through distributors. Revenue is driven by unit volume, retail shelf placement, and price/mix, with branded products carrying better margins than private label. Milk is the primary input cost and a key margin driver. Lifeway manufactures roughly 95% of its products in-house and is investing ~$45M to expand capacity at its Waukesha, Wisconsin facility. Growth is being pursued through retail distribution expansion, product innovation (including a new protein-and-creatine functional beverage called MuscleMaze), and marketing investment in digital media and influencer partnerships. International sales represent about 7% of net sales.
