DESCRIPTION

BIOLASE makes dental laser systems that allow dentists to perform procedures on hard tissue (teeth, bone) and soft tissue (gums) using laser energy instead of traditional drills and scalpels. The flagship product is Waterlase, an all-tissue laser that combines water and laser energy to cut both hard and soft tissue. Waterlase is FDA-cleared for over 80 clinical indications and can often eliminate the need for anesthesia. The second product line, Epic, is a diode laser limited to soft-tissue procedures like gum surgery and teeth whitening. BIOLASE sells primarily to general practice dentists and specialists. In the U.S., which is roughly 69% of revenue, BIOLASE sells direct through a field sales force; internationally, BIOLASE sells through distributors, except in Germany and India where it sells direct. Revenue comes from three sources: laser system sales (~61%), consumables such as disposable tips and fibers (~28%), and services including extended warranties (~11%). Consumables are recurring and grow as dentists use their lasers more. The core growth challenge is low penetration — fewer than 10% of U.S. dentists use all-tissue laser technology. BIOLASE holds roughly 60% global share of the all-tissue dental laser market, so growing overall adoption is critical. To drive adoption, BIOLASE runs a trial program that places lasers in dental practices with hands-on training, operates training academies, and pursues partnerships with dental service organizations and dental schools.
