DESCRIPTION

Kopin designs and manufactures microdisplays and optical subsystems, primarily for defense applications. Microdisplays are small, high-resolution screens used in near-eye devices — viewed through an eyepiece rather than at arm's length — and Kopin's products are embedded in thermal weapon sights, pilot helmet-mounted displays, night vision goggles, and surgical headsets. Beyond individual displays, Kopin designs Application Specific Optical Solutions (ASOS), which are integrated subsystems combining a display with optics, drive electronics, and a housing, sold to defense prime contractors. Kopin claims to be the only company commercially manufacturing all four major microdisplay types: AMLCD, LCOS, OLED, and MicroLED. Defense accounts for roughly 75% of net product revenues, with the largest single program being thermal weapon sights. DRS Network & Imaging Systems alone accounted for 63% of FY25 revenues, making Kopin's results closely tied to a small number of defense programs. Kopin also earns revenue through U.S. government-funded R&D contracts, primarily with U.S. Army programs, which develop next-generation technologies — currently color MicroLED — that Kopin expects to transition into production orders. Kopin uses a fab-lite manufacturing model: it designs critical components in-house, outsources wafer fabrication to foundries in Taiwan and South Korea, and performs final assembly at its own facilities in Massachusetts, Scotland, and Virginia. Growth priorities include MicroLED development tied to the U.S. Army's soldier AR program, a partnership with Greece-based Theon International targeting European and NATO markets, and the U.S. drone display market.
