DESCRIPTION

United Bancorp is a small community bank holding company headquartered in Martins Ferry, Ohio. Its sole banking subsidiary, Unified Bank, provides traditional commercial and retail banking services across northeastern, eastern, southeastern, and south central Ohio, as well as the Northern Panhandle of West Virginia, operating through a main office and 18 branches. Unified's core products are loans, deposits, and securities. The loan portfolio is weighted toward commercial real estate (~62%), with commercial and industrial loans (~19%) and residential real estate (~18%) making up most of the remainder. Unified invests in a securities portfolio, primarily tax-exempt municipal bonds, to supplement loan income. Like most community banks, Unified earns most of its revenue through net interest income — the spread between yields on loans and securities and the cost of deposits and borrowings. Profitability depends on net interest margin, loan and securities volume, funding mix, and credit quality. Non-interest-bearing demand deposits are a key source of low-cost funding, and their share of the deposit base directly affects margins. Unified's customers are individuals, families, and small-to-mid-sized businesses, served through branch relationships and direct banking. Unified competes primarily on local relationships and responsiveness rather than price or technology, and its position is most defensible in smaller, rural markets where large regional and national banks have limited branch presence.
