DESCRIPTION

MSA Safety makes and sells personal protective equipment and safety detection systems for hazardous industrial environments. Products protect workers from toxic and combustible gases, fire, falls, and physical impact, and serve firefighters, energy workers, construction crews, and first responders. MSA's three core product lines are Detection (~41% of sales), Fire Service, and Industrial PPE. Detection includes fixed gas and flame detection systems installed at industrial facilities, and portable gas detectors like the ALTAIR series worn by workers. Fire Service covers self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) for firefighters, helmets, and protective turnout gear. Industrial PPE includes hard hats (V-Gard), fall protection equipment, respirators, and eye protection. MSA sells primarily through over 1,800 authorized distributors globally, with a direct field sales force supporting larger industrial customers. MSA operates two geographic segments: Americas (higher margins) and International. Demand is largely non-discretionary, as workers in hazardous environments must use certified equipment under government and industry standards. MSA positions itself as a premium brand, not a low-cost supplier, and earns customer loyalty through product performance and durability. MSA is building the MSA+ connected ecosystem, pairing portable gas detectors with cloud-based software subscriptions to generate recurring revenue. Connected portables now represent over 10% of portable revenue. MSA has expanded its Detection portfolio through acquisitions, including Bacharach and M&C TechGroup, and targets continued bolt-on M&A in detection and adjacent safety technology categories.
