Matthews is a diversified industrial company operating across two core businesses: memorialization products for the death care industry, and industrial technologies. Memorialization is the largest segment, where Matthews makes and sells bronze and granite grave markers, caskets, cremation urns, and cremation equipment to cemeteries, funeral homes, and monument dealers across North America. Matthews is a leading casket manufacturer and the leading embalming chemical supplier in North America, with caskets distributed through Company-owned distribution centers. This segment is relatively stable, with revenue tied to the U.S. death rate and product mix across caskets, memorials, and cremation products. Industrial Technologies includes three businesses: energy storage equipment, product identification, and warehouse automation. In energy storage, Matthews designs specialized manufacturing equipment for lithium-ion battery production using dry battery electrode technology, selling to gigafactory operators including Tesla. In product identification, Matthews sells industrial inkjet and laser marking systems to manufacturers, with a newer product called Axian — a disposable silicon printhead system — designed to drive recurring ink consumable revenue. Warehouse automation provides warehouse execution software and order fulfillment technology to large retailers, though Matthews has agreed to sell this business to Duravant. Matthews is also substantially exiting its Brand Solutions segment, which provided packaging and brand management services to consumer goods companies, retaining only a 40% equity stake in Propelis — a newly formed entity created by merging the core SGK business with SGS & Co. — which Matthews intends to fully exit within 18–24 months.
