DESCRIPTION

Kroger is the largest pure-play supermarket chain in the U.S., operating nearly 2,700 stores across 35 states under regional banners including Kroger, Ralphs, Fred Meyer, King Soopers, and Harris Teeter. Kroger sells the full range of grocery and household products directly to consumers in-store and through a growing e-commerce channel (pickup and delivery). Kroger also operates over 2,250 in-store pharmacies and over 1,700 fuel centers, the latter of which anchors its loyalty program — over 95% of transactions are tied to a loyalty card, giving Kroger shopping data on approximately 63M households annually. Kroger's private label business, called Our Brands, spans four tiers from value to premium and generates over $39B in sales at higher margins than national brands, with roughly 20% of units produced in Kroger's own food plants. Beyond core retail, Kroger runs a set of higher-margin alternative profit businesses, including Kroger Precision Marketing (retail media), data analytics through its 84.51° subsidiary, and Kroger Personal Finance — together generating approximately $1.5B in operating profit. Kroger is shifting its e-commerce model away from large automated fulfillment centers toward a store-based hybrid model using third-party platforms like Instacart, DoorDash, and Uber Eats, which lowers capital intensity. Key growth priorities include accelerating new store openings, expanding retail media, and investing in AI for operations and personalization.
