DESCRIPTION

Interpublic Group (IPG) is a large advertising and marketing services holding company that owns a portfolio of agencies helping brands plan and execute marketing campaigns across media, creative, PR, data, and experiential channels. IPG's largest business is IPG Mediabrands, a media planning and buying network that includes agencies UM and Initiative, which place advertising for clients across TV, digital, social, and retail media. A growing component of Mediabrands is principal media buying, where IPG takes inventory positions and resells them to clients, bundling inventory, data, and technology. IPG's second core business is its creative networks — McCann Worldgroup, FCB, MullenLowe, and IPG Health — which develop advertising campaigns and brand programs. IPG also owns Acxiom, an enterprise data platform with records on roughly 2.5 billion people globally, which powers audience targeting and identity resolution across IPG's agencies and is sold directly to enterprise clients on multi-year contracts. Rounding out the portfolio are specialized agencies in PR (Weber Shandwick, Golin), experiential marketing (Jack Morton, Momentum), and sports marketing (Octagon). IPG charges clients retainer fees, project fees, and performance-based incentive compensation, with labor costs representing the primary cost base. In December 2024, Omnicom announced a pending acquisition of IPG, which would combine the two into the largest advertising holding company in the world.
