DESCRIPTION

Cullen/Frost Bankers, operating as Frost Bank, is a Texas-only commercial and consumer bank with roughly 204 branch locations across the state's major markets, including San Antonio, Houston, Dallas/Fort Worth, Austin, the Gulf Coast, and the Permian Basin. Frost Bank's core business is relationship banking — targeting businesses and individuals who want more personalized service than the large national banks offer. Commercial banking is the primary earnings driver, with lending across energy, CRE, C&I, construction, healthcare, and manufacturing. Consumer banking is a growing contributor, offering checking and savings accounts, home equity loans, and mortgages. Frost Wealth Advisors, the second segment, provides trust, investment management, brokerage, and insurance services, with ~$51B in trust assets under management or custody. Frost's business model is a traditional spread model: it takes in low-cost deposits and deploys them into loans and a ~$20B investment portfolio of agency MBS and municipal bonds. Its key funding advantage is a large base of commercial non-interest-bearing demand deposits, which management describes as making Frost a "low-cost producer" in lending. Frost's defining growth strategy is an organic branch expansion program launched in 2018, growing from ~130 to over 200 locations, concentrated in Houston, Dallas/Fort Worth, and Austin — markets where Frost has historically been underpenetrated. Management firmly rejects M&A, viewing organic expansion as cheaper and more controllable. Frost is exclusively focused on Texas and has no plans to expand outside the state.
