DESCRIPTION

Corteva is a global agricultural inputs company that sells seeds and crop protection products to farmers in roughly 110 countries. Corteva operates two segments: Seed and Crop Protection. The Seed segment sells corn, soybean, cotton, canola, sunflower, and other crop seeds, with value derived from proprietary germplasm (underlying genetics) and biotech traits like herbicide tolerance and insect resistance. Corteva is a leader in North American corn and soybeans, and its Enlist E3 trait is the leading herbicide tolerance technology for U.S. soybeans. The Crop Protection segment sells herbicides, insecticides, and fungicides, as well as nitrogen stabilizers and biologicals. Corteva sells through distributors, cooperatives, and dealers, and its flagship Pioneer brand uses an agency model — independent reps who sell directly to farmers. Corteva earns higher margins on proprietary seeds and patented crop protection molecules; as patents expire, generics erode pricing. Corteva also licenses its germplasm and traits to third-party seed companies, generating royalty revenue. Demand is recurring since farmers replant each season, though roughly 60% of sales are concentrated in the first half of the year due to northern hemisphere planting. R&D is the core long-term driver, replenishing the portfolio as older products face generic competition. In October 2025, Corteva announced plans to spin off its Seed and Crop Protection businesses into separate publicly traded companies.
