DESCRIPTION

Rubicon is an asset-light digital marketplace and software platform for waste and recycling services. Rubicon owns no trucks, landfills, or physical infrastructure — instead, it acts as a technology intermediary connecting three groups: businesses and governments that need waste services managed, independent haulers and recyclers that perform the actual collection, and municipalities that want to digitize their fleet operations. For large multi-location businesses — including Walmart, Apple, Starbucks, and FedEx — Rubicon acts as a single vendor to manage waste and recycling across locations, replacing the need to coordinate with dozens of local haulers. Rubicon's RUBICONConnect platform lets customers order services, track invoices, optimize pickups, and report sustainability metrics. For municipalities, RUBICONSmartCity helps cities optimize routes, reduce missed pickups, and gather infrastructure data; Rubicon has deployed this in over 100 U.S. cities. Rubicon generates revenue three ways: a spread between what it charges customers and what it pays haulers (the largest revenue driver), a spread on recyclable commodities sold to processors, and SaaS subscription fees for RUBICONSmartCity and RUBICONPro. The SaaS segment carries adjusted gross profit margins above 70%, well above the marketplace business. Rubicon's growth strategy centers on expanding wallet share within existing accounts — management estimates it captures roughly 30% of customers' total waste spend — growing SaaS into commercial fleets and international markets, and adding new accounts organically.
