DESCRIPTION

Dole is one of the world's largest producers and distributors of fresh fruits and vegetables, selling to retailers, wholesalers, foodservice operators, and e-commerce customers across more than 85 countries. Bananas and pineapples are Dole's anchor products, and the company is vertically integrated in these categories — owning farms in Latin America and a fleet of refrigerated container ships to move product to North America and Europe. Roughly one-third of bananas and 75% of pineapples come from Dole's own farms; the rest is sourced from independent growers. Beyond tropical fruits, Dole distributes a wide range of seasonal produce — avocados, berries, cherries, grapes, citrus, and others — sourced from over 100 countries. Dole operates three segments: Fresh Fruit (vertically integrated tropical fruit production and distribution), Diversified Fresh Produce – EMEA (retail, wholesale, and foodservice across Europe and Africa), and Diversified Fresh Produce – Americas & ROW (North American import distribution and South American export businesses). The Fresh Fruit segment is the most capital-intensive and highest-margin. The diversified segments are more asset-light, with Dole acting primarily as a sourcing and distribution intermediary. Profitability is driven by the spread between sourcing costs and selling prices, shipping cost control, and volume throughput. Dole sells both under the DOLE brand and on an unbranded B2B basis. Growth priorities include bolt-on acquisitions in fragmented produce markets, organic investment in tropical fruit varieties, and logistics automation.
