DESCRIPTION

Couchbase makes a high-performance, multi-purpose NoSQL database platform for large enterprises building mission-critical applications. The core product is a distributed, document-oriented (JSON-native) database that combines NoSQL flexibility with features typically associated with relational databases — ACID transactions, SQL-style querying, full-text and vector search, real-time analytics, and built-in caching. Customers use Couchbase to power demanding, always-on applications such as airline reservation systems, retail loyalty programs, mobile banking apps, and telecom identity management — workloads that require sub-millisecond response times, massive scale, and high availability. Couchbase's architecture serves data from an in-memory cache, eliminating the need for a separate caching layer, and supports deployment across cloud, on-premises, and mobile/edge environments simultaneously. Couchbase sells primarily through a direct enterprise sales force, and had 947 customers as of January 2025. Couchbase operates two delivery modes: Couchbase Server, a self-managed enterprise license that represents the large majority of ARR; and Couchbase Capella, a fully managed DBaaS with consumption-based pricing that is the primary growth vehicle. Couchbase's business model follows a land-and-expand dynamic — customers typically start with a single application and expand to additional workloads over time. Enterprise subscription revenue is recognized over the contract term, while Capella revenue is recognized as customers consume capacity, meaning ARR leads revenue recognition for Capella deals. Couchbase is also investing in AI-oriented features, including vector search and agent-building capabilities, to support enterprise AI application development.
