DESCRIPTION

Paymentus provides cloud-based bill payment technology to billers — utilities, insurers, government agencies, telecoms, healthcare providers, and others — and to financial institutions. For billers, Paymentus acts as the operating system for payment collection: a single integration into a biller's back-end systems handles bill presentment, consumer communication across channels (email, text, IVR, chatbot), payment acceptance across all major payment types (credit, debit, ACH, digital wallets), and real-time reconciliation. Utilities are the largest vertical at roughly 50% of revenue; the rest comes from a broad set of other industries. For financial institutions, Paymentus replaces legacy bank bill pay infrastructure with a modern bill payment and money transfer experience. Paymentus also operates the Instant Payment Network (IPN), a proprietary network connecting its biller base to consumer-facing platforms including PayPal, Walmart, and Green Dot, enabling consumers to pay bills through platforms they already use. Paymentus earns a fee per transaction processed — there are no upfront software or implementation fees — so revenue grows through new biller launches, deeper adoption within existing billers, and IPN volume. The business is capital-light with strong operating leverage, as non-GAAP operating expenses are largely fixed and incremental contribution profit flows heavily to adjusted EBITDA. Interchange fees paid to card networks are a significant cost, but Paymentus sees converting part of that cost into a revenue stream as a long-term margin opportunity.
