DESCRIPTION

SoundHound builds and sells Voice AI and conversational AI software, enabling natural spoken language interaction with products and services. The business runs on three revenue pillars. Pillar 1 is royalties: automotive OEMs and IoT device makers pay SoundHound a per-unit or usage-based royalty to embed its white-label voice assistant in vehicles, smart TVs, and connected devices. SoundHound works with over 20 global automotive OEMs and earns royalties as long as those OEMs ship vehicles under contract. Pillar 2 is enterprise subscriptions: restaurants, financial institutions, healthcare providers, insurers, and others pay per-location or interaction-based fees to use SoundHound's AI for customer service automation. Products include Smart Ordering (AI voice ordering for restaurants), Smart Answering (inbound call handling), and the Amelia agentic AI platform, which automates complex workflows and reduces the share of calls requiring human escalation. SoundHound has over 14,000 restaurant locations live and counts 7 of the top 10 global financial institutions as customers. Pillar 3, Voice Commerce, is still nascent: SoundHound earns transaction fees when a driver uses a car's voice assistant to order from a restaurant, connecting the automotive installed base with its merchant network. Gross margins are improving as SoundHound migrates customers from third-party AI models onto its proprietary Polaris speech recognition model. SoundHound has been acquisitive, buying SYNQ3, Amelia, Allset, and Interactions in 2024-2025 to expand its customer base and enterprise depth, with a playbook of replacing acquired companies' third-party AI with its own platform and cross-selling its broader product suite.
