Heliogen is an early-stage concentrated solar power (CSP) technology company. Heliogen builds solar thermal energy systems that use fields of mirrors (heliostats) to focus sunlight onto a receiver tower, generating heat that can be stored and dispatched as electricity or steam around the clock. The key differentiator from standard solar PV is dispatchability — Heliogen uses molten salt for long-duration thermal energy storage, allowing power delivery even when the sun isn't shining. Heliogen offers three core products: a hybrid system combining CSP, solar PV, and thermal storage; a "tri-brid" system that adds natural gas backup for fully firm power; and industrial steam production for carbon-free heat. Target customers include data centers, utilities, oil and gas companies, and mining operations. Heliogen is in early commercialization and has not yet generated meaningful revenue. Near-term, Heliogen earns revenue by providing engineering and project development services, partnering with EPC firms for physical construction. Longer-term, Heliogen intends to license its technology — particularly its proprietary closed-loop heliostat tracking software — to owner-operators and EPC firms. Heliogen also sees a near-term standalone opportunity to license its tracking software to operators of existing CSP plants globally. Current projects are co-funded by customers and government partners, including Woodside Energy and the U.S. Department of Energy on the Capella demonstration project.
