DESCRIPTION

Genenta Science is a clinical-stage Italian biotech company whose lead asset, Temferon, is an autologous ex-vivo gene therapy targeting glioblastoma multiforme (GBM). Temferon works by extracting a patient's own hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells, genetically modifying them to carry an interferon-alpha payload via a lentiviral vector, and reinfusing them. The modified cells differentiate into monocytes that are naturally recruited to tumor sites, where they release interferon-alpha locally — reducing the systemic toxicity that has historically made interferon-alpha impractical as a cancer treatment. Genenta focuses on GBM patients with an unmethylated MGMT gene promoter, a population with very poor prognosis and no curative treatment options. The company completed Phase 1 dose-escalation with no dose-limiting toxicities, though clinical efficacy has not been established. Genenta has no commercial products and generates no revenue. In January 2026, the company announced a pivot away from drug development toward acquiring controlling stakes in privately held Italian defense, aerospace, and national security businesses regulated under Italy's Golden Power legislation, targeting companies with up to roughly €5M in EBITDA. No acquisitions have been completed, and the strategy remains early-stage. Genenta was founded in 2014 by Ospedale San Raffaele, under whose license agreement Genenta would owe royalties and milestone payments if Temferon reaches commercialization.
