DESCRIPTION

Planet Labs is a satellite imagery and Earth observation company. Planet operates a large constellation of satellites that continuously images the entire Earth's landmass every day, then sells access to that imagery and analytics through a cloud-based platform. The core product is broad-area daily monitoring via Planet's "SuperDove" satellites, which image the entire Earth at up to 3.5-meter resolution. Customers use this data to track deforestation, crop health, infrastructure changes, maritime vessel activity, and disaster damage. Planet also offers high-resolution tasking via "SkySat" and "Pelican" satellites at up to 50-centimeter resolution, and a newer "Tanager" hyperspectral product used to detect methane and CO2 emissions. Customers span defense and intelligence agencies, civil governments, and commercial enterprises in agriculture, energy, insurance, and finance. Planet's business model is "one-to-many": images captured once are sold to many customers simultaneously with near-zero marginal cost per additional buyer, driving high gross margins on the core data business. Revenue comes from subscriptions, usage-based contracts, and a growing Satellite Services segment, where Planet designs, builds, and operates satellites for governments under large multi-year contracts — including deals with Germany, Sweden, and Japan. Under this model, the customer gets dedicated coverage while Planet retains the right to sell remaining global capacity to other customers. Planet is also investing in AI-powered solutions like maritime domain awareness and global monitoring to move customers up from raw data access to higher-value, workflow-embedded applications.
