Surrozen is a clinical-stage biotech focused on developing antibody-based drugs that activate the Wnt signaling pathway to repair diseased tissue in the eye. Wnt signaling is a biological pathway involved in tissue maintenance and regeneration; disruptions to this pathway underlie serious eye diseases including diabetic macular edema (DME), wet age-related macular degeneration (wet AMD), and uveitic macular edema (UME). Surrozen's core technology is its SWAP platform, which uses engineered bispecific antibodies to mimic natural Wnt proteins — which are too hydrophobic to manufacture as drugs — by simultaneously bridging two cell-surface receptors to trigger the same downstream signaling. Lead wholly owned programs SZN-8141 and SZN-8143 are multi-specific antibodies that combine Wnt pathway activation with VEGF inhibition, and SZN-8143 adds IL-6 inhibition for inflammatory indications. Neither has entered clinical trials; Surrozen targets an IND filing for SZN-8141 in the second half of 2026. Surrozen also has a partnered program, SZN-413, out-licensed to Boehringer Ingelheim, which is advancing toward clinical development. Surrozen's business model centers on out-licensing assets to large pharma partners who bear development costs, while Surrozen retains milestone and royalty economics — the Boehringer deal included a $12.5M upfront payment and up to $587M in future milestones. Surrozen's 44-person team is based in South San Francisco.
