DESCRIPTION

Markforged makes industrial 3D printers, proprietary materials, and cloud-based software for manufacturers, packaged into an integrated platform called the Digital Forge. The core use case is on-demand, point-of-need manufacturing — allowing factory workers to print replacement parts, tools, jigs, and fixtures on-site rather than waiting on conventional suppliers. Customers span aerospace, automotive, food and beverage, defense, healthcare, and industrial automation, and include Toyota, Danone, and Suntory. Markforged sells primarily through a global network of roughly 100 value-added resellers rather than directly to end customers. The company operates a razor-and-blade model: printer sales drive an ongoing stream of proprietary consumable materials and software subscriptions. Consumables include composite materials like Onyx (chopped carbon fiber) and continuous fibers, as well as various metals. Software subscriptions cover fleet management, simulation, and part inspection. Markforged's key hardware products include the FX10 and FX20 composite printers and the PX100 metal binder jetting system. Software and services revenue has been growing and management views it as the key path to improved profitability over time, alongside consumables. Markforged is also developing Digital Source, a cloud platform where customers can license and print OEM-certified parts on demand, which management sees as a long-term opportunity to shift MRO from physical to digital inventory.
