DESCRIPTION

Eastern Bankshares is the holding company for Eastern Bank, a Massachusetts-chartered community bank founded in 1818 and headquartered in Boston. With roughly $31B in total assets following the 2025 acquisition of HarborOne, Eastern Bank is the largest independent bank headquartered in Massachusetts. Eastern Bank serves the Greater Boston metropolitan area, including eastern and central Massachusetts, southern New Hampshire, and Rhode Island. Its core business is commercial and retail banking, with commercial real estate and C&I lending to middle-market companies as the primary drivers of loan volume. Eastern Bank also operates Cambridge Trust Wealth Management, which manages $10.1B in assets under management or custody and contributes roughly 40% of total fee income. Following the HarborOne merger, mortgage banking has become a more meaningful fee contributor as well. Eastern Bank funds its loan book primarily through branch deposits, with roughly half the deposit base in checking accounts, which structurally lowers its cost of funds. The bank earns primarily through net interest income, with wealth management fees providing rate-insensitive diversification. Eastern has grown through acquisitions — Century Bank, Cambridge Trust, and HarborOne — but management has indicated it does not plan further deals, shifting focus to organic loan growth, wealth management expansion, and returning excess capital through share buybacks.
