DESCRIPTION

Atlas Corp. is a holding company whose sole operating business is Seaspan, one of the largest independent owners and operators of containerships in the world. Seaspan owns a fleet of 186 containerships totaling ~1.9M TEU and leases them to major container liner companies — the shipping lines that move goods for consumers and businesses — rather than operating the vessels itself. Seaspan's nine liner company customers primarily ship goods from Asia-Pacific to the U.S. and Europe. Seaspan charges these customers a daily hire rate under long-term, fixed-rate charter agreements, with an average remaining charter term of ~5.4 years across the fleet. Charters are structured either as time charters (Seaspan provides crew and bears operating costs) or bareboat charters (the liner company takes on full operational responsibility). The fixed-rate, long-term structure insulates Seaspan from spot rate volatility and provides predictable cash flows. Seaspan's fleet has an average age of ~seven years and spans vessel sizes from small feeders to ultra-large 24,000+ TEU containerships. Seaspan has 36 newbuild containerships on order through 2029, many already under long-term charters averaging 11 years. Seaspan is also expanding into vehicle transport through six Pure Car and Truck Carrier newbuilds, and has formed joint ventures in ship management and decarbonization technology.
