DESCRIPTION

DoorDash operates online marketplaces that connect consumers with local merchants for on-demand delivery, primarily through its flagship DoorDash app, as well as Wolt and Deliveroo, the latter acquired in late 2025. A Dasher — an independent contractor — picks up and delivers orders, typically within an hour. Restaurants are the core and most profitable category, but DoorDash has been expanding into grocery, convenience, and retail, with roughly 30% of U.S. monthly active users now ordering outside of restaurants. DoorDash makes money by charging merchants a commission on orders and charging consumers delivery and service fees. DashPass, its subscription program with over 35M members, waives or reduces those fees in exchange for a monthly or annual subscription, driving higher order frequency and retention. DoorDash also sells advertising — sponsored placements within the marketplace — which recently crossed $1B in annualized revenue. Its Commerce Platform offers white-label delivery (Drive), online ordering tools (Storefront), and restaurant CRM software (SevenRooms). Profitability scales with Gross Order Value, as denser order volume reduces cost per delivery by allowing Dashers to complete more deliveries per hour. Internationally, DoorDash operates across 40+ countries through Wolt and Deliveroo. Key strategic priorities include expanding grocery and retail adoption, scaling fulfillment infrastructure with retail partners, consolidating its three separate tech stacks, growing its ad business, and investing in autonomous delivery.
