Biophytis is a clinical-stage biotech based in Paris focused on developing drugs for age-related diseases. The company has no approved products and no commercial revenue. Its core strategy is to advance drug candidates through Phase 2 clinical proof-of-concept, then license or partner with larger pharma companies for late-stage development and commercialization. Biophytis funds operations through equity raises, convertible notes, and non-dilutive grants, with R&D as the dominant cost. The company targets the MAS Receptor, part of the protective arm of the Renin-Angiotensin System, which Biophytis believes can be activated to preserve muscle mass and respiratory function. Biophytis has two plant-derived oral drug candidates: BIO101, the lead compound in clinical development, and BIO201, a preclinical compound targeting retinal diseases. BIO101 is being developed across four indications: sarcopenia (age-related muscle loss), muscle loss associated with GLP-1 obesity drugs, severe COVID-19 respiratory failure, and Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. In sarcopenia, BIO101 completed a Phase 2b trial that was disrupted by COVID-19 and did not meet its primary endpoint, though Biophytis has regulatory clearance to proceed to Phase 3. In COVID-19, BIO101 met its primary endpoint in a Phase 2/3 study, showing a 44% relative reduction in risk of respiratory failure or death. BIO201 targets dry Age-Related Macular Degeneration and Stargardt disease, and is still in preclinical development. Biophytis does not own manufacturing facilities and relies on third-party contract manufacturers for drug supply.
