DESCRIPTION

X Financial is a Chinese fintech platform that facilitates personal consumer loans, connecting individual borrowers with institutional funding partners — primarily commercial banks and licensed consumer finance companies — through a mobile-first platform. Its flagship product, Xiaoying Card Loan, is an unsecured personal loan ranging from RMB 500 to RMB 100,000, with terms of three to twelve months, targeting young consumers who are underserved by traditional banks. Applications are handled through a mobile app, with over 90% of decisions delivered within ten minutes. X Financial earns revenue primarily through loan facilitation service fees, post-origination servicing fees, financing income from its microcredit subsidiary, and guarantee fees from its licensed financing guarantee subsidiary. The business is deliberately asset-light: institutional partners fund roughly 97% of total loan volume, limiting balance sheet exposure. Its proprietary risk management system, WinSAFE, automates credit scoring, fraud detection, and approval, keeping overhead low. Profitability is sensitive to credit quality, as rising delinquencies directly increase credit loss provisions. A significant near-term risk is Notice 9, a Chinese regulation effective October 2025 that enforces a de facto ~24% annual cap on total borrowing costs and restricts bank cooperation to white-listed platforms. Management has warned that Notice 9 will be materially negative for loan volume, take rates, and profitability. X Financial also returns capital through share repurchases and semi-annual dividends.
