DESCRIPTION

Krystal Biotech is a commercial-stage gene therapy company built around VYJUVEK (beremagene geperpavec), a topical gel that treats dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (DEB), a rare genetic skin disease in which patients cannot produce functional type VII collagen, causing chronic blistering and open wounds. VYJUVEK delivers a functioning copy of the COL7A1 gene directly into wound cells via weekly topical application, enabling skin cells to produce the collagen protein they lack. Unlike prior palliative treatments, VYJUVEK addresses DEB at the genetic level and can be self-administered at home. VYJUVEK is approved in the U.S., EU, and Japan, and Krystal sells it directly through a specialty sales force in the U.S., Germany, France, and Japan, and through distributors elsewhere. Because DEB is a lifelong condition requiring ongoing treatment, VYJUVEK generates recurring revenue rather than the one-time dynamic common in other gene therapies. Gross margins run approximately 90–95%, supported by two in-house manufacturing facilities in Pennsylvania. Beyond VYJUVEK, Krystal is advancing a pipeline of additional gene therapies using the same HSV-1 delivery platform across respiratory (KB407 for cystic fibrosis, KB408 for alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency), ophthalmology (KB803 for ocular DEB, KB801 for neurotrophic keratitis), dermatology (KB111 for Hailey-Hailey disease), and oncology (KB707 for non-small cell lung cancer). Krystal intends to self-commercialize pipeline products that fit its rare disease footprint and seek partners for larger-indication programs like KB707.
