DESCRIPTION

GlobalFoundries is a semiconductor contract manufacturer (foundry) — it fabricates chips designed by other companies rather than designing or selling chips under its own brand. GF serves four end markets: smart mobile devices (~39% of revenue), automotive (~21%), home and industrial IoT (~18%), and communications infrastructure and data center (~11%). GF earns revenue primarily on a per-wafer basis, with pricing and margins varying by process complexity. Utilization drives profitability given GF's largely fixed cost base; GF ran at roughly 85% utilization in FY25. GF does not compete in leading-edge logic (sub-5nm), instead focusing on differentiated specialty processes including RF-SOI, FD-SOI (FDX), silicon photonics, SiGe, and GaN, which target specific high-performance applications in its core end markets. Over 95% of FY25 design wins were sole-source, providing pricing stability. GF's manufacturing footprint spans the U.S., Germany, and Singapore — a geography that customers increasingly value as they look to reduce reliance on Taiwan-based fabs. GF is actively shifting mix toward automotive and communications infrastructure, which carry higher margins than its dual-sourced mobile business. Silicon photonics is GF's fastest-growing product line, targeting optical transceivers for AI data centers, with management targeting a $1B annual run rate by end of 2028. GF has also expanded into processor IP through acquisitions of MIPS and Synopsys' ARC business, positioning itself as a broader chip solutions provider for edge AI applications.
