Hydrofarm is a manufacturer and distributor of branded hydroponics and controlled environment agriculture (CEA) equipment and supplies. CEA refers to indoor or greenhouse farming where growers control variables like temperature, humidity, lighting, and nutrients. Hydrofarm's product portfolio covers grow lights, grow media (soils, peat moss, coir fiber), nutrients and fertilizers, and climate control equipment. About three-quarters of sales come from consumables — grow media and nutrients — which growers replenish regularly, creating a recurring revenue dynamic. The remaining quarter comes from durable goods like lighting and equipment. Hydrofarm sells both proprietary house brands (roughly 56% of revenue) and distributed third-party brands, with key proprietary brands including Roots Organics, House & Garden, PHOTOBIO, and Gaia Green Organics. Rather than selling directly to end growers, Hydrofarm sells wholesale to over 1,800 accounts — specialty hydroponic retailers, garden centers, hardware stores, and e-commerce retailers — primarily through its B2B e-commerce platform. The core profitability lever is brand mix: proprietary brands carry higher margins than distributed brands because Hydrofarm manufactures or controls those products and captures more of the value chain. Although Hydrofarm does not sell directly to cannabis growers, management acknowledges that a majority of the products it sells ultimately end up in cannabis cultivation, making revenue highly sensitive to cannabis industry conditions. Hydrofarm is working to reduce this dependence by growing sales in food, floral, international markets, and home grower channels.
