DuPont is a diversified specialty materials company focused on two core areas: healthcare and water technologies, and diversified industrial products. In healthcare, DuPont makes TYVEK sterile barrier packaging for medical devices, specialty components for cardiovascular, surgical robotics, and electrophysiology applications through its Spectrum Plastics and Donatelle businesses, and LIVEO biopharma processing solutions used in drug manufacturing. In water, DuPont makes FILMTEC reverse osmosis and nanofiltration membranes, AMBERLITE ion exchange resins, and ultrafiltration modules used in industrial wastewater treatment, municipal water, and desalination. On the industrial side, DuPont makes TYVEK housewrap, STYROFOAM insulation, and CORIAN surfaces for construction, as well as VESPEL high-performance polymer parts, MOLYKOTE specialty lubricants, and structural adhesives for aerospace, automotive, and packaging applications. DuPont sells roughly half through direct channels and half through distributors, with healthcare and water skewing direct. Because DuPont's products are engineered and validated for demanding applications, customers tend to spec them into their production processes, reducing substitution risk. DuPont's profitability is driven primarily by volume leverage on a relatively fixed cost base, product mix shift toward higher-margin healthcare and water, and new product introductions. The company has been actively acquiring medical device contract manufacturers and is targeting further bolt-on M&A in healthcare.
