MediWound is an Israeli biopharmaceutical company focused on enzymatic debridement — using enzymes derived from pineapple stems to remove dead or damaged tissue from wounds. Its core commercial product, NexoBrid, is applied topically to burn wounds, where it selectively breaks down and removes dead burned tissue in a single four-hour application, without the tissue damage associated with surgical removal. NexoBrid is approved in over 45 countries and has treated over 16,000 patients since its 2013 launch. In the U.S., MediWound licensed NexoBrid exclusively to Vericel, which handles all commercialization and pays MediWound tiered royalties and a per-unit supply price, plus up to $125M in sales milestones. In Europe and Israel, MediWound sells directly; elsewhere, through local distributors. Manufacturing capacity has been the primary constraint on revenue growth, but MediWound completed a sixfold expansion of its Israeli facility in late 2025, with regulatory approvals expected in 2026. A second revenue stream comes from U.S. government contracts with BARDA and the DoD to develop a room temperature-stable NexoBrid formulation for military use, though the BARDA contract expired in late 2025. MediWound's lead pipeline asset, EscharEx, uses the same active ingredient as NexoBrid but is formulated for daily topical use on chronic wounds like venous leg ulcers and diabetic foot ulcers. EscharEx is currently in a global Phase III trial, with peak sales estimated at ~$831M.
