DESCRIPTION

Talis Biomedical was developing the Talis One, a point-of-care molecular diagnostic system designed to test for infectious diseases at physician offices, urgent care clinics, and similar settings, delivering results in under 30 minutes rather than the one-to-five days typical of centralized labs. The system consisted of a compact portable instrument, single-use test cartridges integrating sample preparation and nucleic acid amplification, and cloud-connected software. Talis focused its initial test menu on women's and sexual health, targeting chlamydia, gonorrhea, and trichomoniasis (CT/NG/TV) as its primary commercial product, alongside respiratory and herpes panels. The intended customers were OB/GYN practices, STI clinics, and urgent care centers. Talis planned to pursue a razor-and-blades model — placing instruments at care sites and generating recurring revenue from single-use cartridges billed through existing CPT reimbursement codes. The company never commercially launched its core women's health products, and the Talis One never received FDA 510(k) clearance. The only revenue generated came from NIH grant income under a RADx contract and minimal sales from an early COVID-19 emergency use authorization, both discontinued by 2022. In November 2023, Talis ceased substantially all R&D and manufacturing activities and initiated a strategic alternatives process, including potential sale, merger, asset divestiture, or liquidation. Talis is no longer an operating business.
