DESCRIPTION

Matinas BioPharma is a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company whose sole meaningful asset is MAT2203, an oral formulation of amphotericin B for treating life-threatening invasive fungal infections (IFIs). Amphotericin B is a decades-old antifungal that has historically only been available via IV, with use limited by severe kidney toxicity. Matinas reformulated the drug using its proprietary lipid nanocrystal (LNC) delivery technology, which enables oral administration while eliminating the nephrotoxicity seen with IV formulations. MAT2203 is designed for extended outpatient use, targeting severely immunocompromised patients — primarily those with hematological malignancies or transplant recipients — who develop IFIs like invasive aspergillosis or cryptococcal meningitis and have few or no remaining treatment options. Matinas has designed a Phase 3 trial (ORALTO) with FDA agreement but cannot fund it independently. Following an 80% workforce reduction in late 2024, the company now operates with just two full-time employees and is actively seeking a licensing or sale partner for MAT2203. A near-finalized global licensing deal collapsed in October 2024, and Matinas raised $3.3M in early 2025 to sustain minimal operations while the search continues. The company has no approved products or revenue. If approved, MAT2203 could carry up to 12 years of U.S. marketing exclusivity through orphan drug and QIDP designations, which Matinas uses as a key part of its pitch to prospective partners.
