American Battery Technology Company (ABTC) is an early-stage critical battery materials company focused on producing lithium, nickel, cobalt, and manganese for the U.S. lithium-ion battery supply chain. ABTC pursues two parallel paths to supply these materials. First, ABTC operates a battery recycling facility in McCarran, Nevada, that processes end-of-life and scrap lithium-ion batteries. Phase 1 mechanically deconstructs batteries into scrap metals and black mass, which ABTC sells under offtake agreements or on the spot market. Phase 2, not yet commissioned, would feed that black mass into a proprietary hydrometallurgical process to produce battery-cathode-grade lithium, nickel, cobalt, and manganese — higher-value outputs than raw black mass. Second, ABTC is developing a lithium extraction process for its Nevada claystone mineral deposits, targeting battery-grade lithium hydroxide. A demonstration facility was commissioned in Q4 FY2024 to validate the process at scale. Both businesses are pre-commercial. ABTC's intended customers are cathode manufacturers and chemical refiners. Revenue would ultimately be driven by processing volumes, metal recovery rates, and commodity prices. ABTC has received government funding, including a $4.5M DOE grant and a $2M USABC contract, to partially fund development. ABTC's long-term positioning is as a domestic closed-loop battery materials supplier, with industry collaborations including BASF, GM, Ford, and Stellantis.
