DESCRIPTION

SolarMax Technology is a small California-based solar and renewable energy company that has pivoted its core business toward large-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). SolarMax acts as an Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contractor for utility-scale BESS facilities — it designs, procures equipment for, and builds these facilities, but does not own or operate them after completion. Its current project pipeline includes four BESS contracts with combined potential revenue of over $536M, spanning Texas and Puerto Rico, including a ~$120M facility in Pecos County, Texas and a ~$258M facility also in Texas. BESS EPC revenue accounted for roughly two-thirds of FY2025 revenue. BESS contracts are large, fixed-price agreements, with revenue recognized on a percentage-of-completion basis. Contracts include a battery procurement component (thin margins) and a higher-margin services component. SolarMax's legacy business is residential and small commercial rooftop solar installations, sold exclusively in California at a fixed price per system, with third-party financing provided by partners like Dividend. This business has slowed since California's NEM 3.0 policy took effect in 2024, which reduced the financial benefit of rooftop solar by lowering the rate utilities pay for exported power. SolarMax has installed systems at over 12,000 homes and businesses and is expanding its dealer network, which drove roughly 47% of residential solar revenue in FY2025. The company also has a small LED lighting business serving commercial and government customers.
