DESCRIPTION

Fastly is an edge cloud platform that sits between customers' origin servers and end users, primarily offering a programmable content delivery network (CDN), application security, and edge compute. The CDN — roughly 75% of revenue — accelerates delivery of web content and applications by caching and processing content at points of presence (POPs) close to end users. Fastly's CDN differentiates on programmability: customers can write and deploy custom logic at the edge, configure caching rules via APIs, and push changes globally in real time. The second major product line is application security (~21% of revenue), anchored by a Next-Gen Web Application Firewall (WAF) and expanded to include bot management, DDoS protection, and API security. A smaller but fast-growing line is edge compute, which lets developers run serverless code at the edge using WebAssembly. Fastly sells primarily to large enterprises — streaming platforms, ecommerce companies, gaming companies, and digital publishers — using a direct sales force and cloud marketplaces. Revenue is predominantly consumption-based, tied to traffic volume, security events handled, and compute cycles consumed, though Fastly has been actively shifting customers toward committed-spend contracts. Fastly uses a land-and-expand model, bringing customers in on one product and cross-selling others over time. Growth priorities include cross-selling security into the CDN customer base, international expansion (particularly in Asia-Pacific), and capturing AI-driven machine-to-machine traffic as a structural tailwind.
