DESCRIPTION

Ambiq is a fabless semiconductor company that designs ultra-low power system-on-chip (SoC) processors for edge AI devices — devices that run AI locally rather than relying on cloud servers. Ambiq's core product is its Apollo SoC family, which powers wearables like smartwatches, fitness trackers, and smart rings, as well as medical monitors and industrial sensors. Ambiq's key differentiator is its proprietary SPOT (Sub-threshold Power Optimized Technology) platform, which allows chips to operate at voltages as low as 300 millivolts — versus roughly 700 millivolts typical of competing designs — enabling AI features like biometric monitoring and speech recognition without rapidly draining batteries. Wearables account for the large majority of revenue, and the top five end customers accounted for over 90% of sales. As a fabless company, Ambiq outsources fabrication to TSMC, keeping capital requirements low. Ambiq sells chips to device manufacturers through a direct sales force and third-party distributors, especially in Asia. Ambiq made a deliberate shift in 2024-2025 to exit low-margin customers in Mainland China in favor of higher-paying customers in the U.S., Europe, and non-China Asia. Ambiq pairs its hardware with software tools, including its AmbiqSuite SDK and Helia AI ecosystem, to help customers build edge AI applications faster. Looking ahead, Ambiq is developing Atomiq, a next-generation SoC targeting more compute-intensive applications like AR glasses, expected to contribute to revenue around 2028. Longer term, Ambiq plans to license its SPOT platform to other chip designers targeting data center and automotive markets.
