DESCRIPTION

LyondellBasell is one of the world's largest chemical companies, with its core business centered on producing and selling polyolefins — primarily polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) — along with the ethylene and propylene monomers used to make them. PE is used in packaging, pipes, and construction materials; PP is used in automotive parts, packaging, and industrial applications. LyondellBasell also produces propylene oxide (PO) and derivatives (used in polyurethane foams and coatings), oxyfuels (MTBE and ETBE, gasoline blending components), and styrene monomer through its Intermediates and Derivatives segment. The company sells primarily to industrial manufacturers — packaging converters, automotive suppliers, and chemical processors — through direct contracts and spot markets. LyondellBasell makes money by converting hydrocarbon feedstocks (ethane, propane, naphtha) into higher-value chemicals and plastics, earning the spread between product prices and feedstock costs. Its U.S. Gulf Coast facilities benefit from structurally cheaper shale-derived ethane feedstock versus naphtha-based European and Asian competitors. The company also licenses its proprietary polyolefin process technologies (Spheripol, Spherizone, Lupotech) to third-party producers globally, then supplies those licensees with proprietary catalysts under long-term agreements. LyondellBasell is divesting four underperforming European O&P sites and is investing in a circular plastics business, targeting 2M tons of recycled and renewable-based polymer volumes by 2030 using its proprietary MoReTec chemical recycling technology.
