DESCRIPTION

Arcadia Biosciences is a coconut water company built around a single brand: Zola. Arcadia acquired Zola in May 2021, and after fully exiting its legacy agricultural biotechnology business through 2024 and into 2025, Zola is now Arcadia's sole source of product revenue. Zola coconut water is sourced, processed, and packaged in Thailand, then sold in the U.S. through grocery retailers and foodservice distributors in several flavors, including original, espresso, and pineapple. Revenue is driven by distribution — the number of retail stores stocking Zola and sell-through volume at those stores — making shelf placement the primary growth lever. Gross margins run in the low-to-mid 30% range, with costs dominated by sourcing and packaging in Thailand, leaving margins exposed to input costs and U.S. tariffs on Thai goods. The company operates with only eight employees and spends essentially nothing on R&D, keeping the cost structure lean with SG&A as the primary operating expense. Arcadia's near-term growth strategy focuses on winning new retail and foodservice accounts and adding SKUs at existing retailers. Longer term, Arcadia is developing new product innovations, though the timeline has been pushed to early 2026. Arcadia has also been monetizing its legacy AgTech IP — selling wheat traits and brands to Corteva, Above Food, and Bioceres — to generate cash and simplify its balance sheet.
