DESCRIPTION

NaturalShrimp was an aquaculture technology company that grew Pacific White shrimp indoors using proprietary recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) at facilities in La Coste, Texas and Webster City/Blairsburg, Iowa. The company sold live and fresh shrimp directly to grocery stores and restaurants, positioning its product as a premium alternative to the frozen, imported shrimp that dominates U.S. consumption. NaturalShrimp's core differentiation was a proprietary combination of electrocoagulation — which removes bacteria and ammonia from water without antibiotics — and Hydrogas, a reducing gas infused into the water to reduce oxidative stress on shrimp and improve growth rates. Together, these technologies enabled high-density production in a fully enclosed, zero-discharge system that could be located anywhere. Staggered tank cycles allowed weekly harvests year-round, unlike open-air farms that harvest one to four times per year, supporting a premium pricing model with upscale restaurants and specialty grocers. NaturalShrimp also held three U.S. utility patents and had a subsidiary, NaturalShrimp Global, intended to license its technology internationally, though this remained early-stage. The company never achieved financial sustainability, accumulating substantial debt to fund facility buildouts and technology acquisitions. Lenders placed NaturalShrimp into receivership in September 2024 after it defaulted on its loans, and substantially all assets were sold to lenders in May 2025 in exchange for the extinguishment of roughly $35.7M in debt. The company has ceased operations.
