DESCRIPTION

Unity Biotechnology is a clinical-stage biotech developing drugs to treat age-related diseases. Unity's core thesis is that senescent cells — cells that stop functioning but remain alive and secrete harmful proteins — drive many age-related diseases, and that eliminating these cells can address the root cause of disease. Unity's lead drug candidate is UBX1325 (foselutoclax), a small molecule that blocks BCL-xL, a protein senescent cells rely on to survive. UBX1325 is delivered as a single eye injection and is in Phase 2b development for diabetic macular edema (DME), a retinal disease affecting diabetic patients. Unity is specifically targeting DME patients who don't adequately respond to existing anti-VEGF therapies, which represent roughly half of the DME population. Unity argues UBX1325 could offer a major dosing advantage over anti-VEGF drugs — because senolytics eliminate the disease-causing cells rather than suppressing a downstream protein, senescent cells may take months or years to re-accumulate, allowing for far less frequent injections. Unity licenses UBX1325 from Ascentage Pharma, which retains rights in Greater China and is owed up to $70.3M in milestones plus low-single-digit royalties on future sales. Unity has no approved products and generates no revenue, funding operations entirely through capital raises.
