Sonendo makes the GentleWave System, a medical device platform used to perform root canal therapy (RCT). Rather than mechanically scraping tooth canals with metal files — the conventional approach — the GentleWave System uses acoustic energy and advanced fluid dynamics to clean and disinfect the entire root canal system, including microscopic spaces conventional instruments can't reach. Sonendo argues this results in superior cleaning, higher healing rates, and less post-operative pain, often completed in a single visit. The system has two components: a console (capital equipment purchased once by a dental practice) and single-use procedure instruments (PIs) consumed with every root canal procedure. Sonendo follows a classic "razor and blade" business model — consoles are placed at roughly $50K each to grow the installed base, and recurring PI revenue scales with procedure volume. PI gross margins are in the mid-60% range, with a target to reach the low-to-mid 70s. Sonendo sells directly to endodontists and high-volume general dentists in the U.S. and Canada. Endodontists are the core customer, as they perform root canals as the majority of their practice. As of mid-2024, roughly 20% of U.S. and Canadian endodontists were using the GentleWave System, with an installed base of approximately 1,150 consoles. Sonendo's growth strategy focuses on deepening utilization among endodontists, expanding gross margins through manufacturing improvements and the newer G4 console, and conserving cash by cutting lower-return sales and marketing programs.
